IRC Terms
B
Ban
A restriction placed on a user or IP address preventing them from joining a channel or connecting to a server.
BNC (Bouncer)
Software that sits between your IRC client and server, keeping you connected even when your client is offline. ZNC and PsyBNC are popular examples. TrustNetwork24 shell accounts are ideal for running a bouncer.
C
Channel
A chat room on IRC. Channel names begin with a # symbol (e.g. #trustnetwork24).
Channel Operator (Op)
A user with elevated privileges in an IRC channel, able to kick, ban, and moderate users. Identified by an @ symbol.
Cloak
A mask applied to your hostname to hide your real IP address on IRC networks.
DCC
Direct Client-to-Client protocol used to send files or establish direct chat connections between IRC users, bypassing the server.
E
EFnet
The oldest continuously operating IRC network. Operates without NickServ or ChanServ. Known for its technically sophisticated culture. TrustNetwork24 has its roots in the EFnet community.
Eggdrop
One of the oldest and most widely used IRC bots. Used for channel management, auto-opping, and automation. Can be hosted on a TrustNetwork24 shell account.

Flood
Sending large amounts of data or messages rapidly to a channel or user, often used as an attack to disrupt services.
I
IRC (Internet Relay Chat)
A real-time text communication protocol created in 1988 by Jarkko Oikarinen. One of the oldest internet communication systems still in active use.
IRCD (IRC Daemon)
The server software that runs an IRC network. Examples include InspIRCd, UnrealIRCd, and ircd-ratbox. TrustNetwork24 offers dedicated IRCD hosting via the IRCD X package.
IRC Operator (IRCop)
A user with administrative privileges across an entire IRC server or network.
K
K-Line
A server-level ban that prevents a specific user or host from connecting to an IRC server.
M
Mode
A setting applied to a channel or user controlling behaviour. Examples: +m (moderated), +i (invite only), +n (no external messages).
N
Netsplit
When two IRC servers lose their connection, users on those servers appear to disconnect. When servers reconnect a netjoin occurs.
NickServ
A network service found on many IRC networks allowing users to register and protect their nickname. Not available on EFnet.
P
PsyBNC
An IRC bouncer popular during the golden era of IRC. Supports multiple simultaneous IRC network connections from a single shell account.
Q
QuakeNet
A large IRC network originally built around the Quake gaming community. Still active in 2026.
Z
ZNC
A modern, widely used IRC bouncer that keeps you connected to IRC around the clock. Can be hosted on a TrustNetwork24 shell account from $5/month.
Hosting Terms
D
Bandwidth
The amount of data that can be transferred to and from a server. TrustNetwork24 VPS and IRCD packages include unlimited bandwidth.
DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service)
An attack that floods a server with traffic from multiple sources to make it unavailable. TrustNetwork24 infrastructure includes DDoS mitigation.
DNS (Domain Name System)
The system that translates human-readable domain names into IP addresses that computers use to communicate.

cPanel
A popular web hosting control panel for managing websites, email accounts, databases, and files. Included with TrustNetwork24 web hosting.
L
Linux
The operating system that powers the vast majority of internet servers. TrustNetwork24 infrastructure runs on Linux.
R
Root Access
Full administrative access to a Linux server. TrustNetwork24 VPS customers receive full root access. Shell account customers do not.
S
Shell Account
A hosted Linux user account giving you command line access to a remote server. Used to run IRC bots, bouncers, and other IRC tools. TrustNetwork24 specialises in IRC shell hosting from $5/month.
SSH (Secure Shell)
An encrypted protocol used to securely connect to and manage remote Linux servers.
SSL Certificate
A digital certificate that encrypts data between a web browser and a server, enabling HTTPS.
U
Uptime
The percentage of time a server is operational and accessible. TrustNetwork24 targets 99.9% uptime across all services.
V
VPS (Virtual Private Server)
A virtualised server providing dedicated resources within a shared physical machine. More power and flexibility than shared hosting. TrustNetwork24 VPS X starts at $50/month.
VHOST (Virtual Host)

/64 IPv6 Block
A range of IPv6 addresses containing approximately 18 quintillion unique addresses, allocated exclusively to your server.

Webmin
A web-based server administration interface for Linux. Included with TrustNetwork24 IRC reseller packages.
