How to Connect to IRC

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is one of the oldest real-time communication protocols on the internet, created in 1988 and still actively used by thousands of communities worldwide. This guide will walk you through everything you need to get connected.

Step 1: Choose an IRC Client

An IRC client is the software you use to connect to IRC.

Windows

Mac

Linux

Step 2: Choose an IRC Network

IRC is made up of many independent networks. Popular options include EFnet (irc.efnet.org), Libera.Chat (irc.libera.chat), Undernet (irc.undernet.org), and DALnet (irc.dal.net). TrustNetwork24's own IRC server is at irc.super-vps.com.

Step 3: Connect Using HexChat

  1. Download and install HexChat from hexchat.github.io
  2. Open HexChat — the network list appears on first launch
  3. Enter your nickname in the Nick name field
  4. Select a network or click Add to add a custom one
  5. Enter the server address (e.g. irc.super-vps.com)
  6. Set port to 6667 (standard) or 6697 (SSL)
  7. Click Connect

Step 4: Join a Channel

Once connected, type the following in the server window:

/join #trustnetwork24

Essential IRC Commands

/nick newnick — change your nickname
/join #channel — join a channel
/part #channel — leave a channel
/quit message — disconnect
/msg nick message — private message
/whois nick — look up a user
/list — list channels
